I enjoy world travel so much that it has a section
of its own, but this section is devoted to my other major interests.
- In 2003, I was diagnosed with diabetes.
Fortunately, it appears to have been caught fairly early and with a low-carb
diet, regular exercise and a broad spectrum of chemicals, I should be able to
delay any of the numerous complications that it causes.
- In season, most of my outdoor time is spent
bicycling. I ride most every semi-warm and sunny day, and I
have been enjoying the warm weather this winter courtesy of el niņo.
I frequently ride on charity bike rides, and I have reviews of my rides from
1996, 1997 &
1998.
- Kate Bush has been my favorite singer for many
years. Unfortunately, she only seems to put out a new album every
five years or so. It's a frustrating wait!
- Commercial aviation has always been interesting
to me, and I enjoy reading about classic airliners and airlines. Other
areas of interest are:
- I've also been able to pursue an interest that I have had in
precision time. I've gotten very interested in atomic
clocks and mechanical watches. It's an interesting dichotomy as I am now
constantly resetting watches to match the atomic clock!
- GPS, the Global Positioning System, has gotten a
page of its own. I've been able to link my interest in GPS with my love
for biking and I use the GPS for mapping as I ride. I also carry the GPS
with me everywhere I go and I like to use it while I'm on planes.
- I have been using personal finance software for many years now, and though
I have mostly been a user of Intuit's fine
Quicken program, in 1997 I switched to
Microsoft Money. I am a regular participant in the newsgroup
microsoft.public.money, where I spend much time trying to understand the
software better. A result of this work is a FAQ that I am compiling.
- There are some other hobbies that I have that don't really deserve the
pages of their own, but I have added them here because they are interesting to
me. This section regularly changes, as items get their own page, or drop out
as an interest of mine. Currently, all I have there is some information
on handheld computing.
- I have a love/hate relationship with digital cameras. I would love
to have one, but haven't found one yet which does the job for me. My
Gallery displays several of my abortive attempts.
